About the desk

A practical, encouraging place for people who write — and want to keep writing.

Independent
Reader-supported

Public Square HQ is a working writer's notebook, opened to the public. We publish clear, honest guides on the craft of writing, the business of publishing, blogging, building a readership, and the long, ordinary discipline of the writing life.

There is a lot of advice out there that flatters writers and very little that respects them. We try to do the second thing. Every guide here is written to be useful the same afternoon you read it — a move you can make, a decision you can weigh, a habit you can start — without the hype, the funnels, or the promise that one weird trick will find you ten thousand readers by Friday.

Who it's for

For the person with a draft in a drawer and a nagging feeling they should do something with it. For the blogger writing into what feels like an empty room. For the writer weighing a publisher against going it alone. Working and aspiring alike — if you write, or want to, you're in the right corner.

How we stay independent

The site is reader-supported and kept running by a small set of supporters we're glad to point you toward — you'll find them gathered under the colophon. No owner but the desk, no algorithm to feed, and no reason to tell you anything but what we'd tell a friend.

The voice behind it

Guides are written by a rotating handful of working writers and editors — people who have published both ways, kept blogs alive through the quiet years, and edited more first drafts than they can count. Start with the honest pros and cons of self-publishing, or just browse the whole desk.
